2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Follows Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the necessity for a distinct vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete text from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. After a period of conversations, he starts with us on the specified date.
His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving him soon. We are all eager to persist observing the development of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman presently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 alongside a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, risks, and tests that change every match. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can look forward to additional details as production continues.
