EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
